If you’re struggling with what step might be next in your career and want to get some ideas and inspiration from career assessment websites and aptitude tests, here are some of my favorites:



  • O*NET OnLine the largest (and free) occupational exploration resource and interest survey provided by the government to help you assess your interests and what level of education it would require to get into the jobs that are a “match” to you


  • Imperative. take a quiz at the Purpose Imperative to get your “purpose type” a statement on the “who,” “what,” and “how” of challenges you’re most drawn towards in your career


  • 80,000 Hours if you’re curious about working in nonprofits but aren’t sure that’s the right way to make an impact, this quiz allows you to think through the larger social impact of your career and decide how you can best contribute to the world


  • SoKanU a “free” assessment and mini-results page, with option to upgrade for a fee to see more detailed results, this page matches you to potential best occupations by “fit”



  • Bureau of Labor Statistics  a handbook to help you find career information on duties, education and training, pay, and outlook for hundreds of occupations

If you’re seeking positions via general job boards, try:



  • Indeed an aggregator of listings from many other job boards. Fairly comprehensive for searching existing job recs. This is going to have the most potential job listings of any board, so go here for quantity


  • Idealist this is the go-to #1 source for listing volunteer positions and jobs at nonprofits and NGOs


  • Career Builder a job board that covers most major markets and a huge number of different industries


  • Career Bliss a well-populated job board with focus on job happiness


  • themuse tech-leaning jobs with cool companies and brands for millennials


  • The Ladders a place where mid to senior-level roles tend to be clustered. (They advertise themselves as the $100K+ job board!)
